Chrissy and Stephen |
Stephen's original plan was to propose to Chrissy in a hot-air balloon over Bath, a city we've been to on a couple of visits and really enjoyed. All week he watched the weather, but unfortunately it was just too cloudy for the hot-air balloon ride.
Having lost a week's sleep worrying about it all, Stephen wasn't going to give up and decided that July 7th 2001 was the day, balloon or no balloon. So eventually (just after 5pm!) he popped the question at afternoon tea in the Pump Room (with a string trio playing in the background). Chrissy's response? "Go on then". Not quite the overawed response Stephen had been hoping for, but a result none the less!
We celebrated with cocktails in Bath, caught the train back to Oxford and went round to Carl and Ruth Savage's house - they knew at once what had happened, and we celebrated again with a bottle of champagne that they just happened to have chilled.
Of course, there was still a hot air balloon flight paid for, and this finally went ahead on November 11th:
